Overview
What is it? It is having the knowledge and ability to know
when you need information, what information is needed, where
to get the information from, assessing the relevance/quality
of the information and knowing how best to apply the
information.
Content
We live in an information society, and with so much
information available we need to know when and how to
navigate our way through this information. This is not only
important for individuals, but also for organisations. In an
information society/knowledge economy organisations need
their employees to have the skills to manage and use
information efficiently and effectively to keep their
competitive edge. More specifically, information literate
employees will:
-
be better organised
-
have more developed critical thinking
-
demonstrate better research skills
-
be more confident in communicating information
externally and internally as they will have quality
information available and be able to present it in a
clear way
-
create more ideas through stimulation by new
information/sources
-
produce more consistent, higher quality work through the
use of reliable, quality information.
The training is best tailored to the needs of the individual
organisation, however in general it will cover:
-
1. Recognising the need for information. Identifying a
problem, or working with a new product/service
-
2. Types of information and information sources. Either
experience of that situation/product or academic
knowledge of the topic
-
3. Where to find the information. From colleagues, other
organisations, books, journals, internet search
-
4. Evaluation of the information. Who, why, when
-
5. Organisation of information. Relevance of the
information, who is it useful for, how long is it
useful, what format is needed
-
6. Communication. Who needs to know, in what format and
when.
